Description
Despite an increased interest in management of populations to improve age structure of males and sex ratios, little information is available on movement of adult ([greater than or equal to]3.5 years) male white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). One reason for this lack of information is the difficulty of capturing adult males (e.g., campbell et al., 2005) because of intense harvesting of males. in southern Texas, restricted hunting reduces intensity of harvest of males allowing them to reach older ages. The few studies of annual movements of adult males primarily have come from southern Texas (Webb et al., 2007a, 2007 b, 2008a; Hellickson et al., 2008). Two of these studies focused on estimating size and fidelity of home ranges (Webb et al., 2007a; Hellickson et al., 2008). However, they occurred in different areas of southern Texas, during different years, under different environmental conditions, and on study areas with varying levels of management. Therefore, we supplement the limited data on movements of males by reporting results from our study area in southern Texas. We analyzed movements and size of home ranges of adult ([greater than or equal to]3.5 years) male white-tailed deer during 2 years to determine average annual and seasonal size of home ranges and annual fidelity to home ranges.
