Description

Knowledge of intensity of use and area of landscapes occupied by large mammals are necessary for managers to determine size and configuration of management units. Management recommendations often are prescribed for management units, counties, private properties, or other political boundaries, with little regard for how populations use the landscape. Therefore, management units for deer (Odocoileus) may be more effective if based on area used by the population. Identification ofappropriate size and configuration of management units may improve efficacy of management programs, development of harvesting quotas (Grovenburg, 2007) based on movements of deer among management units (Burris, 2005), and interpretation of data from harvests (Rosenberry et al., 1999; McCoy et al., 2005; Webb et al., 2007). Management units should be large relative to size of area used by deer with as much interior area and as little perimeter as possible. More irregularly shaped units will have a greater perimeter-to-interior ratio (Webb et al., 2007), potentially resulting in animals using 1 unit, similar to a previous study (Burris, 2005). Sustainable management of harvested populations, harvest to reduce populations, and management of diseases require knowledge of size of area and type of landscape used.
